Intervention

The project used three models to disseminate aquaculture practices to smallholder farmers: Local Service Provider (LSP), Hybrid (N), and Private Sector. The Private Sector Model involved contracting hatcheries and feed companies to distribute technologies through their networks. The project aimed to empower women and improve their access to nutritious fish, benefiting households. Increasing production and local market linkages enabled affordable, safe, and nutrient-rich fish for rural, peri-urban, and urban consumers. The project also aimed to enhance stakeholders' knowledge on the importance of fish consumption for nutrition, particularly among women and young children.

Impact

In northwest Bangladesh, 160,000 farmers adopted these practices, increasing fish consumption for 350,000 households. It targets Bangladesh and Nigeria to boost incomes, nutrition, and women's empowerment. Dissemination models include Local Service Providers, Ns, and the Private Sector. The focus is on empowering women and promoting fish-based diets. Progress includes a 50% increase in productivity and raising awareness through trainings and partnerships with Ns and the private sector. The project significantly improves nutrition, food security, and livelihoods in Bangladesh.

Project description

The project aims to improve smallholder incomes, nutrition for women and children, and women's empowerment. In Bangladesh's Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions, the project builds on previous work by engaging local service providers and private sector organizations. They introduce knowledge and technologies to increase the supply of sustainably produced fish and enhance incomes along the value chain. The project utilizes three dissemination models: Local Service Provider (LSP), Hybrid (N), and Private Sector.
